Exploring Emotions Through Music – “My Melodic Identity”

Self Awareness Grade 7 – Lesson 1

Objectives:

  • Identify Emotionally Relatable Songs: Students will recognize songs that resonate with their current emotions, showcasing an understanding of how music can reflect feelings.
  • Utilize Music for Emotional Expression: Students will demonstrate the ability to use music as a means to connect with and express their emotions constructively.

Get Inspired:

Introduction

Music possesses a unique power to impact our emotions positively. Lyrics within songs can articulate feelings that we sometimes struggle to express in words.

Can you recall a song that mirrors your feelings based on your emotional state?

Activity 1: My Melodic Storyline

Instructions: Much like movies have soundtracks that enhance their stories, envision your life as a film and select four songs to form the soundtrack of your life. Include the song title and artist.

Distribute the My Soundtrack handout.

Activity 2: Anthem of Self

Choose one of the songs from your personal soundtrack that reflects something significant about you.

Distribute the My Theme Song handout.

Activity 3: “Lyric Reflections”

In this activity students analyze song lyrics to understand how different emotions are expressed through words.

Instructions:

  • Select a set of song lyrics that encompass a range of emotions, such as joy, sadness, anger, and hope.
  • Distribute the lyrics among the students.
  • In pairs or small groups, have students discuss the emotions conveyed in the lyrics and how they personally connect to them.
  • Each group can present a chosen set of lyrics to the class and explain their interpretations.

Closing:

Conclude the lesson by having students share which songs and lyrics from their soundtrack resonated with them and why.

  • How might having a theme song impact their daily lives?
  • Would their chosen song change depending on their emotional state, or would it remain constant?
  • Encourage reflection on whether their current soundtrack aligns with the narrative they want to shape for themselves.
