Anything is Possible

Perseverance and Growth Mindset

Introduction:

Begin the lesson by sharing the story of Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson’s historic climb of El Capitan’s Dawn Wall in Yosemite National Park. Emphasize that their accomplishment demonstrates the power of hard work and perseverance.

Group Activity:

Discuss the details of their climb, including the 19 days spent climbing 3,000 feet of sheer granite face and the 7 years of preparation leading up to it. Highlight the determination and effort required to achieve such a significant goal.

This was the first free ascent – using ropes only to catch falls – of El Capitan’s Dawn Wall.

Reflection Questions:

Engage the students in a discussion using the following questions:

  1. What is your “Dawn Wall”? In other words, what challenge or goal are you currently working to conquer?
  2. How are you actively working to overcome this challenge? Share strategies or actions you are taking.
  3. How do you maintain a positive mindset when faced with a seemingly insurmountable obstacle?
  4. How does the climbers’ success relate to having a growth mindset? Discuss the importance of persistence, learning from failures, and believing in one’s ability to improve.
  5. Describe the effort or work you’re investing in accomplishing a goal that may not be visible to others. How does this unseen effort contribute to your eventual success?

By reflecting on these questions, students will deepen their understanding of perseverance, growth mindset, and the value of hard work. They will also recognize that challenges and setbacks are opportunities for growth.

Conclusion:

Wrap up the lesson by emphasizing the idea that with determination, hard work, and a positive mindset, anything is possible. Encourage students to embrace challenges, persevere through difficulties, and continue working towards their goals.
